Celebrate joie de vivre! The phrase encapsulated the spirit of Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia’s second bridal offering of romantic, body-conscious gowns for the younger, modern bride. Where their first bridal collection last spring was an ode to their classic, tailored pieces, heavy on intricate detailing and full skirts, this season, paved the way for a more romantic point of view. “It’s a whole different girl shopping bridal today. She’s more self-aware, and she’s savvy,” Babi said before the show. The tight lineup of 13 gowns was still graceful: They were laboriously hand-embroidered with a bevy of glass beads, crystals, pearls, and the like, but lighter in fabrications so that they clung to the body for a sense of angelic effortlessness. Details like mixed lace and asymmetric tiered ruffles added to this ease. It was a streamlined continuation of their latest ready-to-wear collection that focused on strength within grace. Take, for example, an embroidered strapless gown with off-the-shoulder bows, detailed with geometric florals, hand-cut silk petals and an underlay of Chantilly lace — designed for the girl with whimsy who wants a modernist approach to traditional wares.
